School Night to Join Scouting

During the Bicycle Safety event, Hank and another leader or two, will take the parents of the new scouts aside and cover Cub Scouting and the registration process for Cub Scouts. A packet of information along with an application will be distributed that evening.

Sept. 17 is the official evening for School Night to Join Scouting. It is also the normal evening for our pack meeting. We will have a regular pack meeting. We will collect applications and payment from the new scouts. Those applications will be handed in that evening.

Hank will get a letter to each of the new students this week.

St. Gabriel’s School Open House

We’ll have a table at the open house. Here’s a list of volunteers. Because parents cannot stay at the table the whole evening, we will switch on and off as needed.

Other leaders are welcome to participate if they have time. If you’re interested just show up.

We’ll have on hand:

Pictures

Calendar of events

Slide show (from last year’s School Night to Join Scouting)

Books and Manuals

Pinewood derby cars

Den projects (If you have a good one to display please bring it.)

Bike Safety Fair

Amy Hobbs and Steve Polk have volunteered to put on a bike safety fair.

August 27 @ 7:00 PM school parking lot

The whole school is invited. We especially want new scouts to attend. We will have an orientation for the parents of new scouts during the event.

Questionnaire

We plan to send a questionnaire to all families. In it we plan to ask the following:

§         Current information (email, cell numbers)

§         Activities they’d like to see.

§         What area would they like to volunteer? (Everyone will be required to do something.)

Bulletin Board

We’d like to decorate the bulletin board at the bottom of the east stairs outside the cafeteria. We could put pictures of events, etc.

Each den will take a turn decorating the board. The month the den is assigned for pack meeting duties they get to decorate.

Hank must check with the Boy Scouts if we can use part or all of the board.

Financial Need

We agreed if a family has financial need the pack would waive registration fees if requested. Large items like camping would not be included. Since the frequency of request are low, we decided to leave up the Cubmaster to accept of deny any request for registration waiver. We assumed if someone is asking for help they really need it and we will almost always give them the waiver.

Service Projects

Scouting for Food

Park Clean up

Possibly others

Family Camping

We all agreed this was a good idea. Meremac State Park has three group camping areas. Unfortunately they are all reserved every weekend until the camp ground closes for the season. We will shoot for spring and will be ready to put in our reservation as soon as they accept them.

Need a list of weekends in the spring which are acceptable.

Fundraisers

We determined this will require a whole meeting just for this one topic.

Matt Meyer will be our Fundraising Captain. Please direct all fundraising suggestions to Matt.

Den Due

Den dues were included in the recharter fee. Each den will receive $10 per scout. The den leader should keep track of expenses. The money should be spent on den related projects. Any money left over should be rolled over to the next scouting year.

100th Year of Scouting

Many activities are being planned.

Scout Quest in Forest Park Jun 4 – 6 all scouts are welcome.

Fall Activity

Fright Fest – for whoever is interested. Tickets last year were available up to the first week of Oct last year.

Fall Hike and Picnic – In the email I sent out I suggested Meremac State park. However if we go there in the spring for a Family Camp we should probably choose someplace else for fall. I’ll do some research.

Target Date: Sunday Oct 4

Hike, picnic. Details to follow.

Pinewood Derby

We’d like to keep the same schedule as last year.

Blue and Gold

Date: Saturday Feb 20, 2010

Food same as last year

Entertainment: Birds of Prey from theWorld Bird Sanctuary. (Their computer’s were down today, 8/17/2009, so we should have a confirmation in a few days.)

Lending Library / Pack Items

There are supplies in the rectory basement for den meeting. I will compile a list so you know what’s available.

Parental Involvement

We will be sending out a questionnaire for all the families shortly. In it we plan to set the expectation that all parents must participate in Cub Scouts to some degree. This could be at the pack level or den level, even if it’s as simple as helping setup for a pack meeting.

Web Site

After the planning meeting I will update the web site with the current information.

http://StGabrielCubScouts.org/

Email Distribution List

Is everyone getting emails from the Everyone and Leader distribution lists?

Camping Coordinator

Ron has volunteered for this duty again. (Thanks Ron) It involved tracking registration for Dad and Lad, Mom and Me, Webelos Mini Camp, and Webelos Week Long Camp.

Training

Cub Scout leader Training – Saturday Sept. 26. Highly recommended. The pack pays the fee and it a great investment in time.

Pop Wow – Nov. 7 at Seckman High School. All day Cub Scout leader training seminar. (Leader only, no scouts) This is a fun event where you can learn specific skills. (See registration form.)
